Halogen Light Sources: Why Are They Still Used Before LEDs Fully Take Over?
Nov 02, 2026
LED light sources have become mainstream in industrial inspection. Low power consumption, long lifespan, stable output — clear advantages. But in some applications, halogen light sources are still in use, and they won't be fully replaced anytime soon.
Advantages of Halogen Lamps
Continuous spectrum. LEDs are narrowband sources with spectral peaks. Halogen lamps emit a continuous spectrum covering visible to near-infrared. For applications requiring broad-spectrum output — spectroscopy, color inspection, certain IR scenarios — the continuous spectrum of halogen is a natural advantage.
Excellent color rendering. Halogen lamps have a color rendering index close to 100, delivering true color reproduction. For inspection scenarios requiring accurate color judgment, halogen is more reliable than standard LEDs.
Low cost. Halogen bulbs are inexpensive, and the light source construction is simple.
The Drawbacks Are Clear
Short lifespan — typically only 1,000 to 2,000 hours, requiring regular replacement. High heat output — heat is generated right at the bulb, unfriendly to heat-sensitive samples. High power consumption — low energy efficiency.
Where It‘s Used
Spectroscopy. Applications requiring continuous broad-spectrum output.
Microscope illumination. Observation scenarios with high color rendering requirements.
Near-infrared applications. Halogen lamps deliver abundant energy output in the NIR range.
Fiber Optic Cold Light Sources Are the Better Choice
Using a bare halogen lamp puts heat right next to the sample. With a halogen cold light source, heat stays at the source unit, and light travels through fiber to the output end — the output stays cool. This preserves the spectral advantages of halogen while eliminating thermal interference.
Hecho Technology supplies original SCHOTT cold light sources, including the KL, ACE, DCR, and MEGALIGHT series, with matching fiber optic light guides. Product page: https://www.gohecho.com/products
