Fiber Optic Bundles for Spectrometers: An Overlooked Link in Spectral Analysis

November 05, 2026

Spectrometer performance is usually judged by resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, and wavelength range. But one component often gets overlooked — the optical fiber.

Between the spectrometer and the sample, light has to travel a certain distance. How well it travels directly determines how much light reaches the spectrometer, and how accurate it is.

What Spectrometers Demand from Fiber

Broad spectral coverage. Different applications require different wavelength ranges. UV, visible, and near-infrared each call for different fiber materials and specifications. No single fiber covers every band — selection depends on the spectrometer's operating range.

Low loss. Every bit of loss between sample and spectrometer lowers the signal-to-noise ratio. For weak-signal detection especially, fiber transmission efficiency is critical.

Stable end-face quality. Poorly prepared fiber end faces introduce scattering and reflection, adding stray light that degrades spectral quality.

Where It's Used

UV-Vis spectroscopy. Requires high-OH quartz fiber with good UV transmission.

Near-infrared spectroscopy. Requires low-OH quartz fiber with low loss in the NIR range.

Fluorescence detection. Both excitation and emission light pass through fiber — fiber fluorescence background must be low.

Raman spectroscopy. Extremely demanding on Rayleigh scattering suppression and fluorescence background.
